Pulpex Secures Major Investment for Sustainable Packaging
Pulpex, a sustainable packaging company, has received £43.5 million from the National Wealth Fund in exchange for an equity stake. The Scottish National Investment Bank is investing £10 million, with an additional £8.5 million from existing investors.
This funding will support the construction of Pulpex’s first commercial scale manufacturing facility near Glasgow, marking the UK’s first fibre-bottle supply chain.
Pulpex has developed a fibre-based bottle made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, which can be recycled like paper and card. It has a lower carbon footprint than traditional glass or plastic packaging.
The new Glasgow facility will produce 50 million bottles annually. With 38.5 million plastic bottles used daily in the UK—16 million of which are not recycled—there is strong potential for sustainable alternatives.

Why Sustainability Matters for Your Business
Here’s how prioritising sustainability can benefit your business:
- Cost Savings & Efficiency – Energy-efficient practices and waste reduction can lower utility bills. Grants and tax incentives may be available for green initiatives, such as switching to electric vehicles.
- Stronger Brand Reputation – Consumers prefer businesses committed to sustainability. Using eco-friendly packaging or supporting green initiatives can enhance trust and loyalty.
- Competitive Advantage – Many customers are willing to pay a premium for sustainable products. Failing to adapt could mean losing market share to greener competitors.
- Regulatory Compliance & Risk Reduction – Environmental laws are tightening. Proactively adopting sustainable practices helps businesses stay ahead of regulations and avoid legal risks.
- Talent Attraction & Retention – Employees, especially younger generations, favour companies that align with their values. A commitment to sustainability can boost morale and reduce staff turnover.
- Long-Term Business Viability – Businesses reliant on finite resources will face future challenges. Investing in renewable solutions now ensures stability and gradual, manageable change.
- New Business & Funding Opportunities – Investors and governments are prioritising greener supply chains. Sustainability credentials can open doors to contracts, partnerships, and financial support.
Conclusion
Pulpex’s investment highlights that sustainability is not just about responsibility—it’s smart business.
Regardless of your industry/sector/geography, adopting greener practices can drive growth, resilience, and financial opportunity.
